Police: Mom overdosed while alone with infant
An Altoona mother faces a felony charge after police say she overdosed while alone with a 1-month-old baby.
Hailey N. McDonald, 19, allegedly overdosed at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday while the baby was in a crib next to her bed in an apartment on the 400 block of East Walnut Avenue, according to charges filed by Altoona police.
A witness told police that McDonald had been acting normal, but about 30 to 45 minutes after laying down in bed, McDonald started to make gurgling noises, had shallow breathing and urinated on herself. When McDonald wouldn’t wake up, the witness realized she had overdosed.
Police said the witness gave McDopnald a dose of naloxone and called 911.
Police said officers found a powdery substance formed in a line on as mirror near the foot of the bed and it matched the color of two clonazepam pills found in a plastic wrapper inside a tissue box. Three uncapped syringes were also found under the bed, according to police.
Blair County Children, Youth & Families was called and are investigating. The child was placed in the custody of a relative, police noted.
McDonald is charged with a felony count of child endangerment and she was released on an unsecured $25,000 bond after her arraignment Saturday by Magisterial District Judge Andrew Blattenberger.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 15 at Central Court.
