City man accused of assault
An Altoona man is in jail after police say he hit a woman with a piece of wood and burned her with a cigarette during a domestic dispute.
Ronald Lee Shields, 56, was arrested about 7 a.m. Thursday after police were called to the 100 block of East Fourth Avenue for a domestic where an argument over finances allegedly turned violent.
According to the charges, the woman told police the pair were arguing when Shields stood up and leaped at her. When he did, his cigarette burned her cheek.
The woman told officers Shields then hit her in the stomach with a piece of wood.
Police said the woman had a small, circular burn mark on her right cheek but there were no visible marks on her stomach.
Shields was arraigned Thursday morning by Magisterial District Judge Daniel DeAntonio on charges of simple assault and harassment and committed to Blair County Prison. Bail was set at 10 percent of $10,000 cash, and Shields is scheduled to appear at Central Court for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 12.
