Residents urged to honor workers

Today at 8 p.m., and every Tuesday for the immediate future, the local community will be conducting “Illumination Ovation for Central PA,” according to UPMC spokeswoman Danielle Sampsell.

It’s modeled on a recurring event in Pittsburgh, and it’s much like a daily event in New York, in which people sheltering in apartment buildings and other residences cheer, clap and whistle to honor workers who’ve been doing “essential” jobs, including healthcare and grocery store workers.

Mayor Matt Pacifico is promoting the event. People are asked to turn on porch lights and to come outside and shine flashlights or other portable lights.
