FRANKSTOWN — Nine area fire companies responded to a barn fire at 1896 Scotch Valley Road in Frankstown Township on Friday afternoon.

Geeseytown Volunteer Fire Company Deputy Chief Dennis Estep said the call came in about 3 p.m. When crews arrived, the more than 100-year-old barn was fully engulfed.

High winds threatened a house and another barn that sat about 50 yards on either side of the burning structure, but firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading by hosing down both buildings.

“When we first got here, we protected the house and protected the other barn because there was nothing we could do to save the burning building,” Estep said.

Estep said the building collapsed in on itself, and firefighters had the blaze contained within an hour.

Winds sent sparks through the air, igniting two small brush fires that were quickly extinguished.

Estep said there were no injuries, but the barn is a total loss. A state police fire marshal has been called to investigate.

Crews from Geeseytown, Hollidaysburg, Duncansville, Roaring Spring, Williamsburg, Freedom Township, Allegheny Township, Alexandria and Huntingdon responded.
