Student faces charges for Snapchat threats

West Allegheny district pupil allegedly threatened Bedford Elementary attack

A student in the West Allegheny School District is facing a felony terroristic threat charge after a Snapchat conversation was discovered between the student and a few Bedford Elementary fifth graders and another individual in which he described how he was going to attack Bedford Elementary School.

In a statement, Bedford Area School District officials said they received a Safe2Say Something tip about a threat against the school. Safe2Say Something is an anonymous reporting system that allows students and parents to report pertinent information 24 hours a day.

According to the district’s release, a Bedford elementary student alerted a parent about the Snapchat threat and the parent reported it to Safe2say Something. The parent provided screenshots of the Snapchat threat.

Within 15 minutes of being alerted to the threat, Bedford school officials discovered that the student who made the threats lived outside the district. Officials were able to determine the threats came from a student in the West Allegheny School District, and by 10:40 p.m., West Allegheny officials were able to identify the student.

At 11 p.m., Bedford officials were notified that the student in question admitted to making the threats.

School officials said they have not established a connection between the West Allegheny student and the Bedford Area School District. The West Allegheny School District is located about 16 miles west of Pittsburgh near the town of Imperial and the Pittsburgh International Airport.

The West Allegheny School District and the Findlay Police Department continue to investigate.
