Shooting involving officer probed

Incident occurred along Cove Mountain Road

MARTINSBURG — State police at Hollidaysburg continue to investigate an officer-involved shooting along Cove Mountain Road in Martinsburg on Wednesday night.

According to State police spokesman Trooper Joseph Dunsmore, at about 6 p.m., a Martinsburg Borough police officer observed a vehicle with two occupants commit a traffic violation and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.

When the vehicle failed to pull over, the suspects led the officer on a brief chase south on Cove Mountain Road, ending with the suspect’s vehicle crashing on the 2500 block of Cove Mountain Road in North Woodbury Township.

After the crash, the two occupants, whose names have not been released, attempted to flee the area on foot.

When the officer attempted to take the suspects into custody, one of them displayed a firearm, prompting the officer to fire his service revolver, striking the suspect in the abdomen.

Dunsmore said the suspect who was shot is in stable condition and in police custody awaiting charges, while the other suspect was released pending further investigation.

The officer was not injured and has been placed on administrative leave.

The Blair County District Attorney’s Office is assisting state police with its investigation.
