Tyrone restoring meters along Logan Avenue

Local workers take spots meant for customers

TYRONE — A few months ago, at the suggestion of Councilman Dave Snyder, Borough Council ordered the removal of five parking meters on Logan Avenue, next to the municipal parking lot just south of the borough building.

Snyder made the suggestion on behalf of the owners of businesses across the avenue, who wanted their customers to be able to park for free nearby.

Since then, however, employees of businesses in the downtown have taken those spots all day, rendering them unavailable for customers of the businesses that asked for the free spaces, said Councilman Charlie Mills on Monday.

The borough should either restore the meters or post one- or two-hour limits for those spaces, said Mills, who had misgivings about removing the meters initially.

Snyder suggested that changing to signs would work, provided enforcement officials check on the spaces once or twice a day to ensure vehicle turnover.

Code officer Marvin Frazell recommended restoration of the meters, saying the sleeves are still in the sidewalks and the ordinance that authorizes them is still on the books.

Without the meters, the spaces are “gridlocked,” Frazell said.

Snyder joined the other council members in voting the meters back.
