Williamsburg remembers dedicated school board member
Morelli known as ‘very caring person’
WILLIAMSBURG — A longtime member of the Williamsburg Community School Board is being remembered as a caring and giving person.
Ruth H. Morelli, 86, a resident of William Penn Care Center in Jeannette, formerly of Williamsburg, died Wednesday at the center.
Morelli was very active in the community and served on the school board as treasurer and representative to the Altoona Area Vocational Technical School with a total of 30 years on the board.
“She was wonderful, a very giving person. At Christmastime, she always had gifts for us in the business office,” said Debbie Appleman, who served as assistant board secretary for a time while Morelli was on the board
“She knew how she felt about things and didn’t always go with the tide. She had her opinions and stuck with those. You could always count on her,” Appleman said.
“She was a nice lady and was a very caring person. She was all for education and not spending a lot of money. She was on the vo-tech board a long time and did a good job up there,” said Marion Pheasant, who served on the board with Morelli.
Longtime board secretary Dorothy Koontz said Morelli was a very friendly person.
“I worked with her for a long time. She was board treasurer. I would take checks to her home to have her sign them and pick up checks. She was very knowledgeable. She was involved in a lot of organizations in the community. She was a good person,” Koontz said.
Linda Smith was a teacher and then elementary principal and later superintendent while Morelli was on the board.
“Ruth was an advocate for the band. She did a lot of work as a band parent,” Smith said. “She was a very dedicated board member and a wonderful person to work with. She was very dedicated to education in all areas.”
