Ebensburg readies for Dickens of a Christmas

Events for annual fest begin Friday

EBENSBURG — Ebensburg’s 14th annual Dickens of a Christmas will take place Friday to Dec. 8.

Events kick off on Friday with special activities at the Cambria County Courthouse during the day. County employees will decorate the row offices in the theme of a Winter Wonderland.

The courthouse will remain open throughout the weekend for visitors.

A Light-up Ceremony at Kimball Park will take place in the evening followed by holiday productions by Cresson Lake Playhouse and Bishop Carroll High School Drama Club and indoor ice-skating at North Central Recreation Center.

Borough Manager Dan Penatzer said, “Families will enjoy walking through downtown streets looking at decorated windows and extensive decorations in three parks.”

A display of large lighted characters depicting the “12 Days of Christmas” in Veterans Park is a children’s favorite. Burning cresset baskets will be set afire in Penn Eben Park and Kimball Park.

On Saturday, five craft and vendor shows, two live reindeer and the annual Christmas parade will take center stage. The Ebensburg Woman’s Club will host breakfast with Santa at 8 a.m. at the Young Peoples Community Center.

New this year, Cresson Lake Playhouse will host a Christmas tree toss and Santa pub crawl, and Bishop Carroll will host a cookie contest, bake sale and Christmas kid’s crafts on Saturday. L.R. Kimball will host an Ugly Sweater 5K & Family Fun Run, and Coal Country Brewing will have photos with Santa.

Returning favorites will include a Christmas organ recital at Ebensburg Presbyterian Church, a live Nativity and Nativity festival lights display at Ebensburg Methodist Church, a Christmas musical performance at First United Church of Christ and the Cambria County Historical Society’s Mrs. Buck’s bake shop, open house and gingerbread contest and display. The Old Cambria County Jail will be open for self-guided prison tours.

The Cresson Lake Playhouse’s holiday production of “A Christmas Cabaret” will have a show each day at the courthouse.

Other productions during the weekend will include “It’s a Wonderful Life” at Bishop Carroll High School on Friday and Saturday, “Nutcracker, All Jazz’d Up” at Penn Cambria High School in Cresson on Friday and Sunday and “Ebenezer Scrooge, A New Man” during Grace Church’s Dickens dessert theater.

Other activities will include a model train display, Christmas photos and free hot chocolate with Santa, sleigh and carriage rides, a family movie with Santa at the VFW and Mount Aloysius College’s door decorating displays in Cresson.
