BASD awards HVAC contracts
BELLWOOD — Bellwood-Antis School Board members have awarded contracts for the replacement of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system at the middle and high schools.
The contract for the mechanical portion of the project was awarded to MERVAC of Windber at $2,771,000, and Darr Construction Inc. of Berlin was awarded a $350,000 contract for the electrical portion of the project. The total cost of the project is $3,121,000, said Superintendent Thomas McInroy.
“The HVAC system is at the end of its service life and needs to be replaced,” McInroy said.
Work on the project will be done in two phases with work on the middle school beginning in the spring. The entire project is expected to be completed in summer 2021. The work will not affect classes at the schools, McInroy said.
Board members also authorized the administration to borrow $1.5 million to help pay for the project.
In September, board members approved a resolution authorizing the issuance of general obligation bonds and agreed not to exceed $2 million in new money for projects.
“The market for bonds has moved favorably in recent months. The timing is right for this project. We need to replace the aging equipment, we received good bids, and the market is favorable to help with the financing,” McInroy said.
