Police: Dispute over bike leads to arrests

Wertz

Two men are in jail after police say two homes were entered and a man was assaulted on Eighth Avenue.

Donald P. Wertz, 49, of Altoona, and Jeffrey L. Reed, 31, of Hollidaysburg, are accused of drinking heavily before driving to a man’s home on the 900 block of Eighth Avenue to confront him over a dispute between the man and Wertz over a bike.

According to charges filed by Altoona police, the pair first showed up at a home a few doors away and threatened a resident who had found Wertz in his kitchen after hearing a banging at his back door. Reed allegedly told the resident of the home he was going to kill him before the resident pushed Wertz back outside and locked the door. The resident told officers he heard Wertz tell Reed to “kick it in” before Reed knocked on a window at the side of the house and then walked around to knock on the front door.

From there, Reed went to a home two houses away on the same block where the man they wanted to confront lived. Reed and Wertz allegedly confronted the man at the rear of the house, and after Reed punched him in the head, the man ran back inside and locked the door.

It was then that Reed allegedly picked up a chair from the porch and threw it through a window, police said. Reed then entered the home and threw a pot of food at the man in the kitchen, and once in the living room, Reed allegedly overturned a coffee table and punched the man repeatedly.

Reed

Altoona police arrived as Reed tried to leave, and he was taken into custody. Police noted Reed admitted to driving to the 900 block of Eighth Avenue and that he was drunk.

Both Reed and Wertz are charged with felony criminal conspiracy and burglary while Reed is also charged with misdemeanor simple assault, terroristic threats, disorderly conduct and DUI.

Bail was set for Wertz at $20,000 cash by Magisterial District Judge Steven Jackson on Monday morning. Reed’s bail was set at $30,000 cash. Both men remain in Blair County Prison with preliminary hearings scheduled for Oct. 23 at Central Court.
