City man allegedly flees police
Raymond C. Birch Jr., 49, Altoona, has been charged with fleeing police, accidents involving injury, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, DUI, damaging property, reckless driving, theft and running eight stop signs, according to state online records.
After allegedly breaking into a soda machine behind Martin’s supermarket in Logantown early Monday, Altoona police reportedly saw Birch leaving in a pickup and tried to stop him.
Police said he led them on a chase through the city, his truck striking a parked vehicle, then an occupied vehicle — injuring an occupant — and finally jumping a curb at Cherry Grove apartments and hitting a fence, after which he took off on foot, before being apprehended by city police, who encountered resistance trying to handcuff him, according to WJAC-TV.
Birch is in Blair County Prison in lieu of $20,000 cash bail, according to the online records. A preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 16.
