Altoona cleanup day set

A community cleanup day for Altoona neighborhoods is scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 21.

The cleanup initiative will focus on one neighborhood between First and Fourth streets and Lexington and Spruce avenues, according to a release from the United Way of Blair County.

“It’s important that we come together as a community to show love for our neighbors by assisting them with property maintenance that they might not be able to complete on their own,” Mayor Matt Pacifico said in a release. “We are hopeful that we will accomplish this again with the second annual community cleanup day. It was outstanding to see the amount of support last year by both businesses donating supplies and volunteers who gave their time.”

Volunteers will work on projects such cleaning up garbage and debris from the streets and sidewalks, pulling weeds from sidewalks and trimming bushes and trees that are overgrown and in the way of pedestrians.

“We are excited to offer the second annual community clean up in another area of the city,” said Melanie Shildt, executive director of United Way of Blair County. “Volunteers will once again be critical to helping us with this beautification project. We are encouraging individuals and groups to join us in our cleanup efforts. Together, we will make a positive difference in our community.”

The community cleanup day is a partnership between the city of Altoona, United Way of Blair County, Operation Our Town, Altoona Blair County Development Corp. and the Blair Companies Real Estate.
