Police arrest alleged stabber

Warriors Mark man held for attempted homicide in Tyrone

Wrye

TYRONE — Police arrested a man accused of criminal attempted homicide early Saturday morning after a night of searching.

Benjamin Corey Wrye, 31, of Warriors Mark, is accused of stabbing a man Friday on the 800 block of Park Avenue.

Tyrone Borough police were dispatched shortly after 10 p.m. Friday for a report of a male who was stabbed by a knife. Police located the victim, who was transported to UPMC Altoona.

Police said Saturday that the victim’s condition is “critical,” but did not identify the victim.

An arrest warrant was issued for Wrye, and police subsequently found him at Snappy’s gas station in Bald Eagle.

On Saturday, blood was still visible on the porch of 811 Park Ave.

Matt Myers moved into the duplex at 809 Park Ave. last month.

“It’s bizarre what happened,” he said, adding that he does not know his neighbor well, but they always greet each other kindly when they meet.

Myers said he was not home during the incident or the subsequent search.

Across the street, Don Kelly sat on his porch and talked about what the scene looked like Friday night.

The block was closed off and police told people to stay inside their homes, he said. People are in and out of 811 Park Ave. “every night, every day,” he said.

Wrye was arraigned on charges of criminal attempted homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.

He was lodged in the Blair County Prison in lieu of $500,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing for Wrye is to be scheduled before Magisterial District Judge Fred Miller’s office.

Wrye’s court summary indicates he was awaiting sentencing in Centre County for driving under the influence, a second-time offense, which he had plead guilty to and was adjudicated for in July.

His criminal history includes guilty pleas to harassment in May, a DUI and fleeing or attempting to elude police in 2018, a third-degree felony theft charge in 2009, and simple assault in 2016.
