Young equestrian killed in accident

State police in Rockview are investigating a riding accident that killed a young equestrian and her horse.

According to WJAC-TV, Ashley Stout, 13, was pronounced dead at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College, on Thursday after the 9 a.m. accident at the Standing Ovation Equestrian Center in Port Matilda.

Stout’s horse, Avant Garde, also died, the equestrian center said on its Facebook page.

Stout was one of 12 riders chosen to compete in the North American Youth Championships later this month, the United States Eventing Association said.

Stout was an eighth grader at Park Forest Middle School. School officials said Stout’s mother wants the community to know that her daughter “was doing what she loved and was very brave.”

“Ashley was a wonderful and enthusiastic young lady, and we will greatly miss her,” said Principal Karen Wiser.

School officials said counseling was available Friday in the Park Forest Middle School Library.
