Tyrone council candidate replaced
‘Conferees’ choose Mills for ballot
The Tyrone-based members of the Blair County Republican Committee have named an incumbent borough councilman to replace a council candidate who withdrew her name from the November ballot after winning the primary.
The “conferees” chose Charlie Mills — who finished fifth in a primary where four advanced to the general election — to replace Shirley Dawson, who finished fourth, according to county Republican Chairman Jim Foreman and the county returns.
Dawson withdrew because of health issues that surfaced after the primary, she said Wednesday.
“I was tickled pink I won,” she said. “But it’s not fair to the community not to make meetings.”
Mills, who finished just three votes behind Dawson in the primary, was one of two candidates nominated by the conferees, Foreman said.
The other was fellow incumbent Thad Graham, who finished six votes behind Mills and in sixth place in the primary.
The vote to choose Mills was not unanimous, Foreman said.
Kenneth Patterson II, incumbent Bob Dollar and William Wiser III were the top three vote-getters in the primary and will also be on the Republican ballot in November with Mills.
Whitney Preston also ran in the primary.
On the Democratic ballot in November will be Jarod Sather, the only primary candidate.
Dollar, Mills, Graham and Michelle Miller — who didn’t run in the primary — currently occupy the council seats that will come open in January.
There will be a similar meeting of Republican conferees from Martinsburg July 16 to choose a mayoral candidate for November because of the recent resignation of incumbent Rex Hartman, who has moved out of the borough, Foreman said.
Hartman’s seat has been filled for the interim by Richard Brantner Sr., Foreman said.
Hartman’s term ran until early 2021, according to the county election website.
The Democrats will also have an opportunity to place a mayoral candidate on the November ballot.
The state Republican Committee will meet July 13 in Hershey to choose a replacement for state Chairman Val DiGiorgio, who resigned recently, Foreman said.
DiGiorgio, who is from the Philadelphia area, left his post after a story in the Philadelphia Inquirer about sexual exchanges by text between him and Philadelphia City Council candidate Irina Goldstein.
