Spring Cove votes for tax increase
ROARING SPRING — The Spring Cove School Board voted 6-0 Tuesday to approve a tax increase for the next school year.
The real estate tax increase is 0.321 mills, which for a property value of $100,000 is an increase of $32.
That tax increase was approved by John Biddle, Brian Gahagan, Charles Gojmerac, Linda Smith, Troy Wright and Floyd Deterline. Amy Acker-Knisely, James Butler and Jason Rhykerd were absent.
The increase brings the total millage to 11.03 mills.
The board also adopted a 2019-20 budget of $27.9 million. With the tax increase, the budgetary deficit is projected to be $760,864 at the end of June 2020. The district’s fund balance would cover that deficit, Superintendent Betsy Baker said. However, she indicated that the district’s projected deficit would likely not truly end that high.
Contributing to the projected deficit is rising costs of the Public School Employees’ Retirement System, cyber charter school costs and health care, Baker said.
