Portage Area SD to receive safety grant

Portage Area School District will receive nearly $160,000 in state funds for school safety and security efforts, state Rep. Frank Burns, D-Johnstown, said.

Burns said the $159,964 in state funds were awarded through a grant from the state’s School Safety and Security Committee, which is part of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. Act 44 of 2018 resulted in the creation of this committee, which is responsible for developing the criteria schools are to use in performing school safety and security assessments.

“Schools can use these funds to provide counseling services for students, invest in security-related technology and provide training for school staff on safety-related violence prevention efforts,” Burns said.

AASD awarded state safety grant

The Altoona Area School District has been awarded a $136,552 state grant to improve safety and security in its buildings, according to Rep. Lou Schmitt, R-Altoona.

The funding was made available through a new $60 million grant program created as part of a comprehensive school safety bill that was included in the 2018-19 state budget.

“No parent should have to worry about their children’s safety when they send them off to school,” said Schmitt. “This funding will enable the school district to enhance its security efforts in order to provide a safer learning environment for students, faculty and staff.”
