Woman jailed on meth charges

TYRONE — A Tyrone woman is in jail on methamphetamine charges.

Christy Lee Mengel, 37, of 705 Oak St., was arraigned Wednesday on felony and misdemeanor drug charges stemming from an April 17 traffic stop in Tyrone where police allegedly found several bags of methamphetamine.

According to charges filed by Tyrone police, Mengel was a passenger in a Ford Focus that was pulled over near Blair Avenue and 16th Street about 2 p.m.

Both Mengel and the driver, 29-year-old Jason Lewis, had Blair County arrest warrants and were taken into custody. When Mengel stepped out of the car, an officer noticed the top of a small plastic bag sticking out of her waist band.

Mengel initially denied knowing what the officer was talking about when she was ordered to put her hands on the roof of the car because of the plastic bag, but she later told police that the Lewis had shoved the bag of suspected crystal methamphetamine down her pants when they were pulled over.

Police noted in the charges that a search of Mengel’s purse turned up several smaller wallets and pouches that contained drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Police pointed out the items found in Mengel’s purse included three small plastic bags of suspected crystal methamphetamine, a partial Suboxone strip, an opened Suboxone packet containing suspected crystal methamphetamine, a glass pipe with drug residue, 26 small plastic bags with drug residue, 86 small plastic bags, 18 hypodermic needles, two gabapentin pills, a metal spoon with residue and other items such as cotton balls, alcohol prep pads and an orange tourniquet.

Mengel’s bail was set by Magisterial District Judge Fred Miller on Wednesday at $20,000 cash, and she is scheduled to appear at Tyrone District Court on May 7 for a preliminary hearing. Lewis was charged by summons and faces misdemeanor possession and drug paraphernalia charges and is due in court on May 28.
