Recycling programs offered
Christmas lights, gift wrap can be taken
There are a number of holiday recycling programs offered this year for residents by the Intermunicipal Relations Committee.
The IRC is working with local partners and municipalities to recycle Christmas lights, cardboard and gift boxes, gift wrap, plastic bags and film, old electronics and Christmas trees.
All of these materials can be recycled at the IRC’s Buckhorn Recycling and Compost Facility at 1860 Blacksnake Road, Dysart, during regular business hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Certain materials can be dropped off at other locations, according to a press release.
Residents can recycle Christmas lights at both the IRC recycling and compost facilities on Blacksnake Road in Dysart and Dunnings Highway in Duncansville (just past Inlow’s Drive-In when traveling south toward Newry). The Altoona office at 1301 12th St. and Leydig True Value Hardware at 315 Bedford St. in Hollidaysburg will also accept strands of lights.
There will be holiday drop-offs at the Logan Valley Mall from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. People can drop off their gift boxes, cardboard boxes and wrapping paper. The IRC will not be able to accept any plastics or Styrofoam this year. Residents can also leave flattened empty cardboard and gift boxes at the curbside for their recycler.
An electronics drop off will be at the Buckhorn Recycling and Compost facility during the regular business hours listed above. The facility will accept computers, monitors, televisions, keyboards, laptops and Freon containing appliances. Fees may apply. Visit ircenvironment.org for the list of fees.
Hollidaysburg and Tyrone residents can leave live undecorated trees at the curbside for collection. Altoona and Logan Township residents can drop off trees at the city highway yard at 5010 Sixth Ave. or the township highway yard at 100 Chief Logan Circle. Both of the IRC recycling and compost facilities will accept trees for drop off free of charge.
Those with questions can call 942-7472 or email kpop@ircenvironment.org. Visit ircenvironment.org for a complete list of facility hours and drop-off locations.
