Police: Stop nets drugs, gun

City man faces 18 felony drug-related charges

A traffic stop Friday allegedly turned up a stash of drugs and an illegal gun, according to Altoona police.

Joseph D’Agonstino, 36, of Altoona, remains in Blair County Prison in lieu of $75,000 cash bail after his arrest Friday following a traffic stop early Friday in which heroin, pills, LSD, Suboxone and $1,660 in cash were seized.

According to Altoona police, a patrolling officer allegedly saw a red Subaru Legacy, in which D’Agonstino was a passenger, traveling down 11th Street without headlights and with an expired registration.

After the vehicle was pulled over, police discovered D’Agonstino had two outstanding out-of-county warrants for his arrest.

As police frisked D’Agonstino for weapons, officers allegedly found a knife and a glass marijuana pipe. D’Agonstino allegedly started to run from officers but only made it about 50 feet before he was tackled by cops. D’Agonstino continued to struggle with officers as they tried to place him in handcuffs, according to Altoona police.

A bag of marijuana was then found in D’Agonstino pocket, and after a search of the vehicle, a .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun with an obliterated serial number was found under the passenger seat where D’Agonstino had been sitting, police contend. Also under the seat was a small, black safe.

The gun’s safety was off, and there were nine rounds in the magazine, but the chamber was empty, police pointed out.

The driver of the car said he has only known D’Agonstino a few weeks and denied having ever seen the gun or the safe.

Inside the safe, officers allegedly found 40 wax packets with eight of them each containing a small amount of heroin, 5 grams of marijuana, another 4 grams of heroin in a plastic bag, three quarter-inch square hits of suspected LSD, a case holding 12 different types of prescription pills, 15 Suboxone strips, loose drug packaging material that included small zip-close bags, $1,660.75 in cash and one capped syringe.

D’Agonstino now faces 18 felony drug-related charges as well as illegal possession of a firearm along with 20 related misdemeanor charges. Bail was set at $75,000 cash by Magisterial District Judge Daniel DeAntonio, and a preliminary hearing is slated for Jan. 9 at Central Court.

Starting at $2.99/week.
