Jobless rate hits 18-year low as payrolls slips further

Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate hit a nearly two-decade low in August, even as payrolls slipped below July’s record high.

The state Department of Labor and Industry said Friday that Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate dropped one-tenth of a percentage point to 4.1 percent in August, the lowest point since 2000.

A separate survey of employers showed seasonally adjusted non-farm payrolls shrank by about 4,900 in August, remaining just above 6 million.

The biggest gainers were education and health services and the trade, transportation and utilities sectors, while nearly every other sector shrank.

BEDFORD

2-1-1 for residents who need flood-related services

Bedford County residents impacted by storms and flooding should dial 2-1-1 to be added to a statewide list of people who need help with muck-out, mold and other flood related needs.

Local faith-based organizations and agencies will refer to this list to pinpoint recovery needs and make every effort to help as many people as possible, according to a Bedford County Emergency Management media release. There is no guarantee of services.

Those who have called 814-623-9117 to report damages still need to call 2-1-1 for help with cleanup.
