Horell seeking position on Altoona school board
A man born and raised in Altoona is seeking a seat on the Altoona Area School Board.
Dave Horell, 40, is a 1996 graduate of Altoona Area High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree of psychology from Penn State.
He is principal agent of Horell Insurance Agency LLC. Horell’s community involvement includes volunteering with the Knights of Columbus and coaching in the Independent Youth Baseball league.
“I was born and raised here in Altoona. I grew up a few blocks from the school hub — walking first to St. Mary’s, then Roosevelt and eventually Altoona High. I enjoyed my education and had many inspiring teachers and coaches along the way — many who have become friends and/or clients,” he wrote.
The possible closing of elementary schools sparked his interest in running for school board.
“I, myself, had questions about the process and alternatives. I began to read more information about school board affairs and the difficulties they are faced with. It’s certainly not an easy position. I think we have outstanding school board members who all bring something special to the decision making process,” Horell wrote in his announcement letter.
Horell is the youngest of eight children, and his siblings have also chosen
to raise families in Altoona.
“If elected, I would try to promote a healthy group decision making process, a process which would take into consideration not only budget concerns, but also a deep understanding of our educators needs balanced with the concerns of our community. I will keep an open minded strategy which has a vision for our districts future in education,” he wrote.
