Tyrone Area votes to not exceed state-set tax increase limit
TYRONE — Tyrone Area School Board voted unanimously Tuesday to not exceed a state-set tax increase limit when preparing a budget for next school year.
Earlier this month, district business administrator John Clark presented the district’s 2017-18 Act 1 index to board members.
The index, which is set by the state Department of Education, stipulates that the district’s property tax millage rate cannot be increased by more than 3.5 percent next year. Tuesday’s vote does not mean the district will take advantage of the full 3.5 percent increase. It only means they agreed not to exceed that amount. Board members could opt for no increase or a lesser increase.
If the district — which spans portions of Blair, Centre and Huntingdon counties — took advantage of the full 3.5 percent, it would see about $192,000 in additional revenue, Clark said.
Real estate millage rates differ in each county, Clark said.
In Blair County, taxes are to be set at 6.039 mills — barring any increase — next school year. At that rate, the district should see revenue at $3,641,795, according to county figures.
