Kaup to receive Lifetime award

A lead partner of a local accounting firm that has served the area for more than 100 years has been selected as the 18th recipient of the Blair County Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award for Business Excellence.

Rex Kaup, a lead partner at Young, Oakes, Brown & Co. PC since 1979, will be honored at the Business Excellence Dinner on June 25 at The Casino at Lakemont Park.

The award recognizes a Blair County business person who enjoyed an outstanding business career and who made a positive impact on the community.

Kaup graduated from Penn State with a degree in accounting in 1973 and joined YOBCO in 1975.

In 2016, the Kiwanis Club of Altoona presented its Distinguished Citizen Award to Kaup because of his dedication and hard work as a partner in the accounting firm and his involvement with various business and community organizations.

Kaup is a worthy recipient of the award, said chamber President/CEO Joe Hurd.

“In business, nothing can jeopardize the reputation of a company more quickly than its inability to maintain a strong financial posture. When you look at the Blair County business community and see the large number of businesses that have trusted Rex Kaup and his YOBCO firm with keeping their financial compliance efforts on track for such a long period of time, you don’t ask why Rex deserves a Business Excellence Award. You ask why it has taken so long for him to receive one. Rex balances his professional competence with tremendous community spirit. So many successful events and programs have Rex’s imprint on them,” Hurd said.

Kaup said he was truly surprised and honored to be recognized by the chamber with this prestigious award.

“Having attended most of the dinners for the prior recipients, I understand their commitment to our community and tried to do my part in supporting charitable and service organizations with my time and resources. All of this would not have been possible without the support of my YOBCO partners and staff, who provided me a base of operations to get involved for the past 40-plus years. I look forward to seeing many friends and clients at the June 25 dinner where, I’m sure, there will be lots of funny stories to hear about my journey,” Kaup said.
