Military pauses Osprey flights again

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon is temporarily pausing flights again of its fleet of V-22 Ospreys after weakened metal components were found in a part after another near crash.

Naval Air Systems Command said Monday that the pause was recommended last week “out of an abundance of caution” by Vice Adm. Carl Chebi, the head of the command.

Man acquitted in NYC subway death

NEW YORK — A Marine veteran who put an agitated subway rider in a chokehold on a New York subway has been acquitted in the man’s death.

A Manhattan jury cleared Daniel Penny on Monday of a criminally negligent homicide charge. The case arose from Jordan Neely’s May 2023 death and became a prism for differing views about public safety, valor and vigilantism. The 26-year-old Penny gripped Neely around the neck for about six minutes.

Wildlife rescuers rush to oil spill

BOSTON — Wildlife rescuers are rushing to tend to dozens of geese and ducks that were soaked in oil after a spill in a Boston river.

Police and fire departments were dispatched a little after noon on Sunday to the Muddy River on the border of Boston and the town of Brookline following reports of a possible oil leak. Police say responders found there was some kind of leak into the waterway that impacted wildlife.

Zelenskyy open to troops from West

KYIV — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he is open to the potential deployment of Western troops in Ukraine to guarantee the country’s security as part of a broad effort to end the almost three-year war with Russia.

He said Monday that the deployment would be a step toward Ukraine joining NATO. But he said that Ukraine needs a clear understanding before that of when the country will be in the European Union and when it will be in NATO.

Travel ban imposed on President Yoon

SEOUL — South Korea’s Justice Ministry has imposed an overseas travel ban on President Yoon Suk Yeol as authorities investigate allegations of rebellion and other charges in connection with his short-lived declaration of martial law last week.

Yoon’s martial law decree brought special forces troops onto Seoul’s streets. And it plunged South Korea into political turmoil. Yoon avoided an opposition-led bid to impeach him on Saturday. Most governing party lawmakers boycotted a parliamentary vote.

Gang leader accused of massacre

PORT-AU-PRINCE — A gang leader who controls a key port in Haiti’s capital is accused of massacring older people and Vodou religious leaders to avenge his son’s death.

Human rights organizations say the true number of dead isn’t clear, but Haiti’s government on Monday acknowledged the massacre and said over 100 people were killed.
