Blair Garden Club to hold picnic July 28

The Blair Garden Club will hold its annual summer picnic at 5 p.m. Monday, July 28, in Pavilion No. 2 at Valley View Park, 301 Valley View Blvd., Altoona.

Members are to check their yearbooks as to the covered dish item they are to bring.

The evening’s program will be led by club members Mary Cramer and Lois Hampton, who will give instructions on how to press and dry flowers for the September meeting.

Sweet Adelines to practice for Curve game

The Altoona Chorus of Sweet Adelines will be welcoming singers to come and learn the National Anthem so they can perform with the chorus at the Altoona Curve baseball game on Aug. 19.

Singers must attend at least one rehearsal at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 29 or Aug. 5, at Jaggard Methodist Church.

PASR to meet Aug. 5 at Marzoni’s

The Blair County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) meets at 11:30 a.m. on the first Tuesday of every month.

The group welcomes new members who have been employed by local school districts or Intermediate Units and are now retired.

The Aug. 5 meeting will be held at Marzoni’s in Duncansville. It is a self-pay lunch. The nonprofit for which the group will be collecting monetary donations is the American Red Cross of Blair County.

Grant winner addresses Alpha Beta

Alpha Beta Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met June 17 at the Bistro at Village Green.

President Tina Smith-Gilbert reported that 12 chapter members attended the state convention, and she highlighted notable members’ contributions. Kristine Walters will serve on the Nominating Committee at the state level. State President Royce Boyd was commended for her management of the convention. Susan Trimiloni won the Album of Distinction award for her many years of service to the community.

Bree McCahan, senior language arts teacher at Tussey Mountain High School, described how she used the $500 teacher enrichment grant awarded by Alpha Beta. With the funds, she paid for scrapbooks, binders and page protectors for her senior scrapbook project.

Royce Boyd, financial committee chair, presented the annual budget and explained how it was formulated. Amy Snyder introduced a memorial project to record members’ involvement in Alpha Beta and Delta Kappa Gamma.

Linda McElroy sent thanks from the Jabulani School in Zimbabwe, Africa, to which Alpha Beta members donated $500 for food and school supplies. Projects Chair Linda Clapper announced that backpacks for students served by Bedford County Children and Youth will be packed with school supplies at the August meeting.

Jennifer Harclerode led the group in playing “Vacation Bingo,” a game based on members’ favorite vacation memories.

The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 5, at the East St. Clair Township Building in Fishertown.
