50 years ago: 1974

Temple Beth Israel, Dr. Nathan Kaber rabbi and Benjamin I. Levine Jr. president, celebrated its 100th anniversary with a dinner-dance at the Temple social hall.

25 years ago: 1999

A local group called Fire Base Eagle, Randy Gensamer member, held a sports memorabilia auction to raise funds to erect a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Wasington, D.C., at the Van Zandt VA Medical Center in Altoona. A football signed by Joe Paterno donated by former Penn State and pro player John Ebersole, then a Blair County commissioner, went for $500.

10 years ago: 2014

The Multimodal Transportation Fund awarded a $585,000 grant to Rails to Trails of Central PA to construct an underpass under state Route 22 to connect the Lower Trail with Canoe Creek State Park for bikers and hikers.

— In 1962, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev informed the United States that he had ordered the dismantling of missile bases in Cuba; in return, the U.S. secretly agreed to remove nuclear missiles from U.S. installations in Turkey.

— In 1991, what became known as “The Perfect Storm” began forming hundreds of miles east of Nova Scotia; lost at sea during the storm were the six crew members of the Andrea Gail, a fishing boat from Gloucester, Massachusetts.
