Connie Porta, a nurse at the Altoona Veterans Hospital and graduate of Bishop Guilfoyle High School, was voted the first Miss Hope for Cancer of Blair County from a field of 21 at the Penn Alto Hotel, making her eligible for state competition in Carlisle in March.

Sally Masci, owner of Color Scan Inc., 2009 Seventh Ave., was named the Small Business Person of the Year by the Saint Francis College Business Resource Center. Color Scan had its origins at the Altoona Mirror job printing department.

World War II veteran Harry “Chuck” Barrett gave an interview to the Mirror about being shot down in his bomber over France, escaping with the aid of the French resistance, being jailed in Spain, being released to England and joining another bomber crew. The city of Altoona named a day after him, Aug. 17, the date he was shot down.
