Blair Garden Club awards scholarships

Two scholarships have been awarded to seniors in Blair County who are pursuing careers in areas aligning with the goals of the club.

These careers include agriculture education, biology, city planning, ecology, environmental engineering and science, floriculture, forestry, conservation, horticulture, landscape architecture, nursery production and management, plant pathology, soil science, turf management and wildlife science.

The recipients for 2020 are Lauren Simpson of Duncansville and Gianna Caputo of Altoona. Each recipient will receive a $1,000 award payable to the college of her choice.

Simpson is a graduate of Hollidaysburg Area High School and will major in environmental engineering at Franklin and Marshall College. She has been active in her high school athletic and music programs, the National Honor Society and Project Diversity, as well as many community service activities. She is interested in finding solutions for such environmental problems as pollution, flooding and climate change. She is the daughter of Brent and Deb-orah Simpson.

Caputo is a graduate of Altoona Area High School and will major in chemical engineering with a minor in environmental engineering at Penn State University. She has been active in sports, National Honor Society, Student Council and many school clubs. Gianna has also been active in the community through such organizations as The Brian Morden Foundation, Mountain Lion Backpack program, Salvation Army and Toys for Tots. Through her career she hopes to use her abilities to advocate for environmental protection and conservation. Gianna is the daughter of John and Pamela Caputo.
