Rotary awards $27K in scholarships

The Rotary Club of Altoona has once again provided support for graduating high school students in Blair County.

In the last 21 years (1998-2019), more than $419,000 has been donated by club members to assist more than 419 students from three area high schools (Altoona Area High School, Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center and Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School).

These donations come directly from local Rotary members and their associated businesses.

Due to the generosity of one Altoona Rotary Club member, this year’s scholarship award was increased to $1,500 each.

In the past years, it was $1,000 each.

Of this year’s 18 students receiving scholarships, 12 students are from Altoona Area High School, four students from Bishop Guilfoyle High School and two students from the Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center.

AAHS recipients include Hailey Alwine, Andrew Eisel, Margeret Fox, Isaiah Freet, Micah Hamilton, Camryn Hoff, Daniel Kennedy, Jazzmine McCauley, Allison Myers, Morgan Myers, Makayla Ruggery and Jonah Zolnak.

BG recipients include Abigail Anderson, Olivia Butler, Julia Cacciotti and Emily Kasun.

GACTC recipients include Morgan Myers and Kayden Tremmel.

The Altoona Rotary Club has supported the local community since 1916.

Some of the assistance includes Sister Paula’s soup kitchen, highway cleanup, VA Home, scholarships, Blair County Arts Festival and much more.
