Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, Gallitzin, 886-6150

Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site will begin winter hours of operation Nov. 1. Park buildings, including the Summit Level Visitor Center, Engine House 6 and the Lemon House, will be closed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Park buildings will be open Fridays-Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Park buildings will be closed for federal winter holidays including Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and George Washington’s Birthday. Park grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset. For safety, the superintendent may adjust operating hours during inclement weather. Normal operations will resume May 1.

Spirits of the Staple Bend Tunnel, Saturday. Visitors will meet park staff at the Staple Bend Tunnel Trailhead parking lot in Mineral Point and take a short bus ride to the tunnel. At the tunnel, visitors will meet historic characters who will share some of the darker stories of traveling and working on the Allegheny Portage Railroad. The hourlong program includes a lantern-lit walk through the 901-foot-long tunnel. These family-friendly tours begin at 6, 7, 8 and 9 p.m. The fee is $2 per person. Reservations are required by calling 886-6150. In the event of inclement weather, the event may be cancelled. Check the local media outlets, the park website or call 886-6150.

Halloween Family Fun, 3 to 6 pm. Sunday. Come in costume and see park dressed for Halloween. Hayrides, crafts, marshmallow roast.

Fort Roberdeau Historic Site and Natural Area, 383 Fort Roberdeau Road, Altoona, 946-0048

Open for tours, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission fees: $5 adults, $4 seniors, $2 children under age 12.

Greenwood Furnace State Park, 15795 Greenwood Road, Huntingdon, 667-1800

Halloween in the Park, 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Friends Pavilion 4 near the beach.

Johnstown Flood National Memorial, St. Michael, 495-4643
