Genealogical society to meet Thursday

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Blair County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Roller Hojeth Memorial Library, 431 Scotch Valley Road.

David Kurtz, president of the Bellwood Historical Society, will present “Sneaking a Railroad into the Eureka Party: In Pursuit of Boutique Coal.”

This meeting is free and open to the public.

PARSE members hear from Gority

The Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees (PARSE), Blair Bedford Huntingdon Chapter 1-10, met Sept. 17 at the American Legion Social Hall, Hollidaysburg.

Donna Gority, former Blair County commissioner, was the featured speaker.

Gority spoke about her family history, tenure as the first female county commissioner and her continuing involvement in numerous organizations.

Eva Howell, president, and James Dell, secretary, reported on the proceedings of the PARSE Governing Board Meeting which they recently attended.

Membership in PARSE continues to grow. Participants were thanked for donations of nonperishable food items which will be taken to the Huntingdon Food Bank.

The next chapter meeting will be at noon Nov. 19 at the Prime Sirloin Buffet, Duncansville. A notice will be mailed to all members.

Wm. Penn Assn. to hold memorial Mass

The William Penn Association, Branch 800, Altoona, will hold its annual memorial Mass for deceased members at 9 a.m. Nov. 28, Thanksgiving Day, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Altoona. All members are urged to attend.

The branch Christmas party is scheduled for 6 p.m. Dec. 8 at the Hampton Inn, Altoona. Cost is $7 per person with no charge for children younger than 12 years old. Members and guests are welcome. Call Dan Greiner at 943-7471 for reservations by Nov. 28.

Officers recently voted to make a monetary donation to the American Rescue Workers, Hollidaysburg.

The WPA is a fraternal organization with headquarters in Pittsburgh and branches throughout the United States.

Swinging Squares to dance Thursday

The Swinging Squares Square and Round Dance Club will meet from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday at Jaggard United Methodist Church, 1801 Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona.

It will be Sports Team Night. Wear a T-shirt, sweatshirt, etc., of your favorite sports team.

Dances are on Thursday nights. Club caller is Howard Williamson, and the club cuer is Donna Williamson.

It is always free to watch. Class member fee is $4. Nonmember fee is $4.50.
