Blair Senior Services volunteers learn about Blair resources

Blair Senior Services Inc. held its monthly in-service for Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion volunteers Sept. 18 at the Hollidays-burg American Legion Post 516 Social Hall.

Lunch and light refreshments were served as volunteers listened to multiple speakers and were given program updates.

Karen and Keith Natoli, a couple who volunteers at the American Red Cross, presented “Be Red Cross Ready” to the Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion volunteers.

This presentation brought awareness to some of the ways they can be prepared in case of an emergency, mentioning the Smart911 program, and other ways to be prepared for any emergency that may occur.

Joseph Fagnani, chairman of Service Paws of Central PA, visited the group, along with his service dog, Phoebe. Fagnani spoke about service dogs and the role they can play for someone living with disabilities and what the volunteers can do if they feel someone they know is in need of a service animal.

Maria Brandt, executive director of The Arc of Blair County, spoke about the services and programs that are available through The Arc.

The Arc of Blair County is not only a place for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities to thrive; it is also a great resource center that can be useful at any stage of life.

“We work with any type of disability and with any age group,” Brandt said. “Sometimes people can acquire a disability later on in life, after a traumatic brain injury or other accidents. You never know when or where you’ll need The Arc and our services.”

The federal government does not fund The Arc of Blair County. All donations given to The Arc stay within Blair County to assist Blair County residents with disabilities.
