Food safety training set for volunteers/nonprofits

The workshop “Cooking for Crowds: A Volunteer’s Guide to Safe Food Handling” will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 19 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 115 E. Penn St., Martinsburg.

The workshop is designed for volunteers who are responsible for preparing food for large numbers of people on occasion such as church suppers, fire hall dinners, band boosters or other types of food fundraisers.

The following topics will be discussed: how food becomes unsafe, purchasing and storage of food, keeping food safe during preparation, hot and cold holding, personal hygiene and cleaning and sanitizing.

Elaine Smith, Penn State Extension educator, will teach the class. The cost is $50 per organization, which includes registration for two to four people. For each additional person, there is a $5 per person fee. Individual registration is $25.

Participants will receive a certificate of completion and each organization or individual registrant will receive the “Cooking for Crowds” food safety manual, a thermometer and food safety posters. Registration is required and the deadline to register is Friday.
