C-K plans 50th homecoming celebration

CLAYSBURG — The 50th anniversary celebration of the Claysburg-Kimmel Alumni Homecoming celebration will be held Sept. 27 and 28..

Some changes have been made to the Friday night schedule beginning this year.

The association was notified recently by the CKSD administration that the district solicitor had advised the district to initiate changes to the annual homecoming dance that will more clearly delineate alumni (public) and student parts of the evening.

The following outlines the Friday evening homecoming events:

Alumni reception — 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the high school gymnasium and gym lobby. C-K alumni, parents and community members are invited to meet and greet the homecoming king and queen contestants and vote for their favorites; cost is $5. Voting will take place from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. with the king and queen being announced at 8 p.m.

Homecoming dance —

8 to 10 p.m. in the gym. This students-only event will kick off with the crowning of the homecoming king and queen and continue with an evening of dancing.

In the past, the proceeds from the ticket sales for the dance went to the alumni and completely paid for all aspects of homecoming, as well as three scholarships given at graduation. With this year’s changes, the students will keep the dance ticket sales money in order to pay for costs related to the dance. The money collected from the adults who attend the reception to vote for the homecoming king and queen will hopefully cover the parade costs and allow the association to continue giving the three scholarships.

On Sept. 28, starting at 1:30 p.m., the parade line-up will occur at the Claysburg Little League Field at the north end of town. At 2 p.m., the parade will proceed through town south to the Claysburg-Kimmel High School. The alumni group needs alumni band members, cheerleaders, majorettes and flag carriers to march in the parade. People and groups are also encouraged to enter floats, cars, etc.

At 6 p.m., the alumni band members and flag carriers meet near the greenhouse behind the school at the north end of the high school building to march on to the field. They will step off at 6:15 p.m. At 6:30 p.m. the Alumni Pre-game Show and Presentation of Homecoming Court will be done on the Claysburg-Kimmel football field. Then at 7 p.m. the C-K football game vs Mount Union will begin.

The Claysburg-Kimmel Alumni Homecoming celebrations actually go back to 1940. However, today’s modern-day festivities began in 1969 or 50 years ago.

The association sponsors the Claysburg Community Days celebration and has become involved with other events and activities throughout Claysburg over the years.

From 1920 through 2019, Claysburg-Kimmel has had at least 6,000 graduates.
