Yesteryear

Craig Ormsby of Martinsburg submitted this photograph of “Stultz Field,” which Ormsby believes was officially known as Peterson Memorial Field. Flying in a Ford Tri-Motor owned by Harold Johnson, the photographer was Ormsby’s late aunt, Florence “Billit” Lytle Ormsby. The pilot was her future husband, and Ormsby’s late uncle, Edward “Eddie” SIngleton of Bellwood. There is no date on the photo, but it is believed to be in the wearly 1930s. Mr. Singleton was an early area barnstormer, flew U.S. Mail Service and would s ubsquently be employed as a civil pilot Instructor under contract to the United States Army Air Corps and trained World War II pilots at Avon Park Army Airfiled, Avon Park, Fla., and operated under in conjunction with Lodwick Field, Lodwick School of Aviation.
