Genealogical society to host speaker

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Blair County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at Roller Hojeth Memorial Library on Scotch Valley Road.

David C. Hsiung will present “Central Pennsylvanians That Joined the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897-1898.”

Residents of Blair and Huntingdon counties heard about the Klondike Gold Rush and got swept up in the excitement and joined the masses from around the country and the world that ventured their way up into the Canadian North. Some of the letters they wrote back home were published in the local newspapers. This talk will look at how they described their travels, adventures and hardships and what that experience meant to them.

Hsiung has taught at Juniata College, Huntingdon, since 1991, and is the Charles and Shirley Knox Professor of History. He teaches the introductory “U.S. History to 1877” survey and the first-year writing course “College Writing Seminar,” as well as advanced courses that examine early North America, the American Revolution, North American environmental history and public history.

The meeting is free and open to the public.
