Greyhounds join global walk Sunday

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Monica’s Heart Greyhound will participate in the 10 th Annual Great Global Greyhound Walk on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. The walk will take place at Canoe Creek State Park, with parking near the marina/beach lots 1-4. Picnic tables will be set up.

This walk is one of over 200 international organized walks by rescues and adopters alike, with their sighthounds, to raise awareness about the breed and promote adoption.

Monica’s Heart will also have some T-shirts available for purchase, as well as baskets for raffle.

Anyone is welcome to come out and meet the greyhounds and talk with us about adoption, or just visit with the greyhounds.

Veterans, widows invited to food bank

DUNCANSVILLE — The Duncansville Veterans of Foreign War Post 8724 Auxiliary sponsors a monthly Central PA Food Bank at the Duncansville VFW Post 8724, 1665 Newry Lane.

The next give-away will be held on Monday. It is for Blair County veterans, widows and active duty service members. Additional dates are July 8, Aug. 12, Sept. 9, Oct. 14, Nov. 11, and Dec. 9. Proof of eligibility is needed, either a Military ID or DD-214.

GACTC sets summer open house series

The Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center announces its summer open house series, Walk-in Wednesdays June 12 through Aug. 7.

During the open houses, individuals interested in adult education programs may visit GACTC to learn about the various programs and financial aid options, including Veterans benefits and tour the facility.

The programs include Practical Nursing, Medical Assistant, Administrative and Medical Office Specialist, Expanded Function Dental Assistant, Phlebotomy, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning and Welding. Many of these programs offer industry-valued certifications.

Master Gardeners workshop June 15

JOHNSTOWN — The Penn State Master Gardeners of Cambria County will hold a seminar/workshop from 10 a.m. to noon June 15 at the Sandyvale Memorial Gardens and Conservancy Greenhouse, 80 Hickory Street in the Hornerstown neighborhood of Johnstown.

Joyce Long, Cambria County Master Gardener and Jessica Crum-Lasko, Master Gardener Apprentice, will present a two part seminar/workshop on:

Part I: Native Plants ­– the use of plants native to this region and Pennsylvania ­ presented by Apprentice Jessica Crum-Lasko.

Part II: Pollinator Gardens and Design ­– how to create a pollinator garden ­ presented by Master Gardener Joyce Long.

This workshop is good for beginners and will provide hands-on learning opportunities. Handouts will be distributed on these topics. Get ready for Summer! Join us for this fun and informative seminar at Sandyvale Memorial Gardens & Conservancy Greenhouse.

The cost for the seminar is $20 per person.

Claysburg-Kimmel group sets event

IMLER — The Claysburg Kimmel Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) will host a âCash Bashã drawing June 15 at the Imler Area Volunteer Fire Hall. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. Cash prizes award through the night starting at 6:45 p.m. $20 donation includes food, adult beverages, drinks, snacks and a chance to win prizes totaling $1,000.

The group is seeking donated items for the auction. The fundraiser will benefit those attending the National Leadership Conference in San Antonio.
