Beekeepers to meet today in Houtzdale

HOUTZDALE — The Cambria-Clearfield-Blair County Beekeepers will meet at 2 p.m. today at the Houtzdale Fire Hall, 601 Good St.

The topic will be mating nucs and queen rearing.

There is no charge to attend, and participants don’t have to be beekeepers.

Daughters of the Nile host workshop

Dorcas Temple No. 129 Daughters of the Nile hosted a membership workshop April 27 at the Fairfield Inn in Altoona.

The workshop was presented by Past Supreme Queen Vesta Marshal of Toronto, Canada, Past Queen Heather Herridge of Montreal Quebec, Canada, and SueEllen Hickman of Baltimore, Md.

The workshop was intended to aid the temples in recruiting and retaining members. Attendees were from Dorcas Temple in Altoona, Airys Temple in Pittsburgh, Ozemb Temple in Harrisburg and Re Temple in Cumberland, Md.

Daughters of the Nile is a an international fraternal organization for women 18 or older who are related by birth or marriage to a Shriner, Master Mason or a Daughter of the Nile or a member in good standing of a Masonic-related organization for girls or was a patient in a Shriners Hospital for Children.

It is also a social group and work concessions at the Altoona Curve baseball games and make chocolate candy in the fall, among other activities as fundraisers to aid its cause to help children.

Throughout the U.S. and Canada, the Daughters of the Nile contribute more than $1 million to the Shriners Hospitals each year.

Hollidaysburg class of ’52 to meet

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Hollidaysburg High School Class of 1952 invites all members and guests to attend a monthly luncheon held at 11:30 a.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at Hoss’s Steak and Sea House, Patchway Drive, Duncansville.

The next meeting is Tuesday.

Golden Nuggets plan dinner-dance

The Golden Nuggets Club in Altoona will hold a dinner-dance at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bavarian Hall, Altoona.

The cost is $12 per person. Three hours of dancing will be held in the upstairs ballroom after the meal. The club is accepting new members.

Chimrocks to hold Train, Hobo Night

The Chimrock Square & Round Dance Club will hold a dance from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Masonic Hall, 1008 Edgar St., Hollidaysburg. It will be “Train and Hobo Night.”

The cost is $5 to dance. It is free to observe.

Future dances include:

June 2 — “Gospel Music Night.”

June 16 — “Father’s Day: Root Beer Floats.”

June 30 — “Christmas in July.”

The group will take a summer break in July. Dances will resume Aug. 4, which will be “Elvis Night,” followed by “Hawaiian Shirt and Luau Night” on Aug. 18.

Schuhplattlers plan Maifest Saturday

The Altoona Almrausch Schuhplattlers will hold its annual Maifest on Saturday at the Unter Uns Club on Van Buren Avenue and 14th Street, Altoona.

The event is a dinner-dance. Dinner will be from 6 to 7 p.m.

Dinner will include Schnitzel and dumplings.

The dancers will perform after dinner going in and out the glockenspeil. Friends of the club from Hollidaysburg Area High School will also be singing some German tunes.

The band AutoBahn from Pittsburgh will perform.

Tickets must be purchased in advance. The cost is $15 for adults and $7 for children ages 5 to 10.
