AASD teachers receive CARE Awards

Two Altoona Area School District teachers received Educator CARE Awards during the AASD Staff Opening Day Session Aug. 22.

These awards are presented annually to an elementary teacher and a secondary teacher who have demonstrated commitment, achievement, responsibility and excellence in the classroom.

Anna Gutshall, a teacher at Ebner Elementary School, received the elementary award. Gutshall is an AAHS alum, a graduate of Penn State University and holds a master’s degree from St. Joseph’s University.

Gutshall has worked at the Altoona Area School District for the past eight years.

The secondary education award recipient was David Borst. Borst is a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and holds a master’s degree from Penn State University.

He is a physics instructor at the Altoona Area High School and is the adviser of the Junior Academy of Science. He has been teaching at AASD for the past 23 years.

Each of the award winners received a plaque in recognition of their excellence in teaching, along with a wristwatch from Kranich’s Jewelers in Altoona.

The Educator CARE Awards have been presented on an annual basis since 1985 by the school district and the Altoona Area Education Association.
