Hollidaysburg library sets Oct. activities

The Hollidaysburg Area Public Library has books, movies, magazines, audiobooks, digital books, digital magazines and digital audiobooks, puzzles, ukuleles, video games and music CDs available for checkout.

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Hollidaysburg Area Public Library has announced its October events.

Library hours are 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

n Ancestry: Library Edition is available for free public use on the library’s public computers.

n “1,000 Books Before Kinder-garten” is designed to encourage parents to read 1,000 books to their child before they start kindergarten. Book logs/electronic apps are available to help parents keep track. This self-paced program is free and is guided by the 1,000 Books Foundation.

n Girl Scouts Western PA hosts Library Girl Scout Daisies (kindergarten and first grade), Brownies (second and third grade) and Juniors (fourth and fifth grade) Troop 46502 from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays at the library. Email melanie@halibrary.org for more information.

n Artwork courtesy of 321 Art Gallery of Hollidaysburg will be displayed in the Community Room throughout the month of October. Works may include photography, watercolor, mixed media, oil paintings and more, and displayed items are available for sale to the public. For more information, call 317-5045.

n Meteorite samples and pictures of the newly updated Hollidaysburg Planetarium will be displayed from the collection of Fred Marschak, promoting the planetarium’s community programs. Visit “Hollidaysburg Planetarium” on Facebook for more information.

n The Handwork and Arts Group (adult crafting club) meets from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. each Tuesday. Take your own materials and projects; call Janice at 695-2281 for more information.

n The Knit Wits Knitting and Crocheting Club meets from 6 to 7:30 p.m. the first Thursday of each month. Take your own materials/projects; beginning knitters are asked to take light-colored yarn and size 8 needles. No signup is needed, visit the club’s Facebook page for more information.

n The Construction Club will meet from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. each Friday in October. Signup is required; space is limited. Children ages 6 to 12 can enjoy designing/creating with Lego bricks, wooden blocks and books. Email melanie@halibrary.org to sign up.

n Story times will be held at 6 p.m. Mondays and 10:30 a.m. Thursdays and Fridays in October. No signup needed; children must be accompanied by an adult.

n The ABC Photo Society will meet at 7:15 p.m. Oct. 1 and 15. Visit abcps.club for meeting topics; all are welcome.

n The Mystery and Mayhem Book Club will meet at 2 p.m.

Oct. 9 to discuss “Bring Her Home” by David Bell. Copies of the book are available for purchase at the library.

n Free computer classes will be held at 1 and 6 p.m. Oct. 10. Tom Robison will answer questions at the class. Participants can email questions ahead of time to

n The Allegheny Essential Oils Club will hold free classes from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 3 (topic: Cooking) and Oct. 17 (topic: Making Hand Sanitizer). All are welcome; visit the club’s Facebook page for more information.

n The Mah Jongg Club (American Version) will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Wednesday in October. Beginners are welcome; call 693-9292 to sign up. This program is intended for adults.

n The Canasta Club will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Thursday in October. Beginners are welcome; call 693-9292 to sign up. This program is intended for adults.

n The “Friday ROCKS” intergenerational drop-in program will meet from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. each Friday in October. All ages are invited to paint rocks to place in public places for finders to keep or re-hide. Post pictures of completed rocks to Facebook: Central PA Rocks.

n “Friends Meeting” will be held at 10 a.m. Oct. 4. All are welcome; come and meet the Friends of the Hollidaysburg Area Public Library.

n Ceramics classes will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 4 and 18 at the library. Kathy Brua of Fired Up Ceramics Co. will provide a variety of project choices, brushes, paint and firing at a materials cost of $6 per project. n The Evening Classics Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 4 to discuss “Animal Farm” by George Orwell. Copies of the book are available for purchase at the library.

n “Texas Hold’em 101” will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. Beginners are welcome; intended for adults, no signup needed.

n Free Tech Help will be provided from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 6, 13 and 20 to help with technical questions on laptops, tablets, cell phones and other devices. No signup needed; first-come, first-served; always call ahead for availability.

n The Inspirational Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 11 to discuss “Heart of Stone” by Jill Marie Landis. Copies of the books are available for purchase at the library.

n “Excel for Beginners” will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 13 and 27, Nov. 17 and Dec. 1 and 15. This free multi-class series is taught by Tom Robison. Sign up or ask questions by emailing corporal99

n “Best Game Night Ever!” will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 13 at American Legion Post 516 Social Hall, Legion Park. The $30 ticket per person includes a chicken dinner, dessert and entry for door prizes. Games will include but are not limited to canasta, bridge, bingo, Texas Hold’em, raffle items, tear-off tickets and books autographed by famous authors. Tickets are available at the library.

n Boscov’s “Friends Helping Friends” 25 percent discount shopping passes are available for purchase for $5 at the library. Shop Oct. 16 from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Boscov’s, Altoona. 100 percent of ticket sales benefit the library.

n Hollidaysburg Community Partnership Pumpkin Festival will be held Oct. 20. Enjoy a storytime in front of the Courthouse with Miss Crystal and Miss Melanie.

n A Smartphone/Tablet Walk-In Clinic will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 15 and 29. Melany Tapia of Tapia Technology will help smartphone and tablet users understand how to use their devices, including installing and using apps, transferring pictures, email accounts and more. n “Teen Reading Lounge” will be held each Wednesday in October. This free book discussion club for teens is provided through a grant from the Penn-sylvania Humanities Council with funding from Benzel’s Bretzels and support from Keller Engineers, Inc. n “Pizza Hut Family Fun Night” will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Oct. 23. Hand in (or show on your phone) the library’s flyer for this event for dine in, carry out or delivery at Pizza Hut’s Duncansville location, and 20 percent of sales will benefit the library.

n “Free Hearing Screening” Hear4U screening kiosk will be available from Oct. 23 through Nov. 5, courtesy of Lemme Audiology Associates.

n The Best of Times Book Club will meet at 2 p.m. Oct. 25 to discuss “Boys in the Boat” by Daniel James Brown. Copies of the book are available for purchase at the library.

n A free showing of the movie “Vertigo” (1958, Rated PG, 2 hours, 9 minutes) will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 26. No signup is needed; snacks will be provided.

n “Ukulele Jam” will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 28. The Allegheny Ukulele Kollective invites all interested people to attend; there will be ukuleles available to use. Email alleghenyukes@gmail.com for more information.

n “Music With Marabeth” will be held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 31. Children and their grownups are invited to come sing, dance, wiggle and giggle with Miss Marabeth including fun with egg shakers, rhythm sticks, hula hoops and more. No signup needed; children must be accompanied by an adult.

n Keep Blair County Beautiful will meet at 6 p.m. Oct. 31. All are welcome; the meeting’s mission is to inspire, educate and inform people toward a clean, green and beautiful Blair County. Call 942-7472 for more information.

n Two new handmade quilts are on display at the library, to be raffled on Oct. 20. The quilt raffle proceeds benefit the library and its services. Tickets are $5 each or three for $10.

n The public is encouraged to support the library’s fall fundraising: Gardner’s chocolates, Sheetz coupon booklets, and Friends of the Library’s pecan sale, wreath sale and Best of Friends Bookstore.
