Thon, Four Diamonds receive donation

HERSHEY — Central Pennsylvania Subway Restaurants presented a donation of $21,552.46 to Thon and Four Diamonds on March 20 after a monthlong promotion that ran in nearly 300 restaurants. The check presentation took place in the lobby of the Children’s Hospital, 500 University Drive, Hershey.

Throughout the month of February, Subway Restaurants of central Pennsylvania featured the “Cookie That Cares” campaign, in which a percentage of every featured Rainbow Gem cookie sold throughout the month was donated to benefit the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON) and Four Diamonds at Penn State Children’s Hospital. Four Diamonds is an organization that funds pediatric cancer research and treatments at Penn State Children’s Hospital.

This was the fifth time that the central Pennsylvania Subway Restaurants have run the Cookie That Cares promotion.

Educators donate to Easter for Eli

PSEA Central Region Cluster 2 teachers and educational support staff from Altoona Area and the GACTC, Hollidaysburg Area, Claysburg-Kimmel, Bellwood-Antis, Tyrone Area, Spring Cove Area, Philipsburg-Osceola Mills and State College Area recently donated $500 to help give Easter baskets to young hospitalized patients through the Easter for Eli project.

Easter for Eli was started by Roaring Spring native Martin Garrett whose son, Eli, passed away from Non-Hodgkin’s T-cell Lymphoma when he was

3 years old.

In his memory, Garrett began collecting Easter baskets to be delivered to children who are hospitalized during the Easter holiday.

“Easter for Eli project is a wonderful way for educators to get involved to support needy children. As educators and support staff we wanted to be involved for children who are spending the holiday in the hospital,” said Todd Russell, PSEA Cluster 2 liaison.

Russell and Outreach Coordinator Kelly Hinkledire have been supplying new books to newborns in local hospitals through their Books for Babies program, and the Easter for Eli initiative as a natural extension of their efforts.
