RSVP honors volunteers in Blair, Huntingdon counties

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Blair and Huntingdon Counties thanked its volunteers at two recognition banquets in April, which was Nation-al Volunteer Recognition Month.

RSVP volunteers provided 24,562 hours of support during the 2016 calendar year at local organizations that address community needs. The organizations partner with RSVP to become an RSVP Station and receive support for their volunteers age 55 and older.

At each banquet, volunteers shared food and a chance to socialize and received a Senior Corps pin and gifts of appreciation. At the Blair banquet, Wendy Meli-us, executive director, Cen-ter for Community Action, welcomed attendees, and Robin Beck, RSVP Advisory Council vice chair, recognized the special awards recipients.

At the Huntingdon banquet, Susan Michalik, board president, Center for Com-munity Action, welcomed attendees, and David Fryer, RSVP Advisory Council chair, recognized the special awards recipients.

Ron and Sarah de los San-tos, serving at Van Zandt VA Medical Center, and Dale Grissinger, serving at Huntingdon Meals on Wheels, received the Spirit of Volunteerism Awards for Blair and Huntingdon counties respectively.

Recipients were nominated by their station supervi-sor and chosen for their exemplary service by the RSVP Advisory Council. Other nominees included Joyce Kerns serving at Garvey Manor, Gary Reid serving at Contact Altoona and Harold Snyder serving at Blair Senior Services.

Four volunteers received special recognition for completing the most service hours between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2016.

In Blair County, Jim Rozier served 559 hours at Altoona Food Bank and Joyce Kerns served 1,189 hours at Garvey Manor.

In Huntingdon County, David Fryer served 402.50 hours combined at Center for Community Action/ Meals on Wheels/Van Zandt VA Medical Center, and Amelda Weaver served 641.50 hours at J.C. Blair Health System.
