Altoona Mayor Matthew Pacifico presented Rabbi Shneur Horowitz of the Chabad of Altoona with a proclamation declaring Wednesday, April 9, as Education and Sharing Day. The proclamation was made in honor of Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, who dedicated his life to education. Wednesday marked Schneerson’s 123rd birthday and the 76th anniversary of the leadership of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, which means “City of Love,” the proclamation reads. Courtesy photo
Community Lenten lunch
A Hollidaysburg community Lenten Lunch and service sponsored by the Hollidaysburg Area Ministerium will be held at noon Friday, April 18, at the First United Methodist Church, Allegheny and Jones streets. Area pastors will participate and a meat-free lunch will precede the service. Donations will go to the American Rescue Workers.
Easter Egg hunts planned
— The Greenwood United Methodist Church will host its annual Easter egg hunt at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 19, in the Prayer Garden across from the church.
— Newry Lutheran Church, 1030 Shamrock Lane, Newry, will host a Community Easter Egg Hunt beginning at noon Saturday, April 12. The event will be moved inside the church in the event of inclement weather. More than 500 candy-filled eggs will be available for children to find. The event is free to the public.
— The Well will hold an Easter egg hunt at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24 at the Willowbrook Trailer Park playground. There will be snacks, games and a short message of hope.
Chef salad sale begins
A Chef’s Salad Sale will be held by the Greenwood United Methodist Church. Salads will be available for pickup on Friday, May 9. Salads are $12 and tickets are available by calling 814-943-5834 or email office@greenwoodunitedmethodist church.com. Last day to order tickets is Tuesday, May 6.
Food distribution planned
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Eighth Avenue and 13th Street, Altoona, will hold its monthly food pantry distribution from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24. Food distribution is done on a drive-thru basis. More information is available on the church’s website or Facebook page, or call the church at 814-942-1372. Leave a message and calls will be returned. Donations to the food pantry, either in money or in nonperishable food are always welcome.
Trees topic of PEACE talk
Christ Community United Methodist Church, 5715 Roselawn Ave., Altoona, will be continuing its PEACE Initiative Studies with a conversation based on Reforesting Faith: What Trees Teach Us About the Nature of God and His Love for Us by Matthew Sleeth, MD. This will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 21, at the church. May’s study will be centered on Gena Thomas’ book “Separated by the Border” and the topic of refugees in America. This roundtable is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. May 21. Limited copies of the books are available at the church.
Clothing giveaway planned
Grace’s Closet at Grace Lutheran Church, 1114 N. Cambria St., Bellwood, will host a clothing giveaway from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 12. Spring clothing is available. Masks are optional. For more information, call the church at 814-742-7501 or 814-742-7416.
Music, worship service set
Juniata Church of the Brethren, 306 N. Ninth Ave., Altoona, will host the Carson Valley Praise Team for an evening of music and worship at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 13. The event will celebrate the Palm Sunday scriptures. The group, made up of six musicians from the Carson Valley Church of the Brethren, are under the direction of Misty Harvey.
Taize Tuesday programs
Zion Lutheran Church in Hollidaysburg will host Taize Tuesday programs at 7 p.m. Tuesday through April 15. There will be light discussion, a Taize style of evening prayer using simple chants, silence and candles. The theme is Teaching on the life and ministry of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Bonhoeffer was a German Lutheran pastor, neo-Orthodox theologian and anti-Nazi dissident. He was accused of being associated with a plot to assassinate Hitler, was tried and hanged during the collapse of the Nazi regime. The church is at 500 Allegheny St., Hollidaysburg.
Lenten lunches offered
Wehnwood United Methodist Church will offer Lenten lunches at noon Wednesdays through April 16. Under the theme, “Journey to the Cross: Encounters with Jesus,” the luncheons will include a light lunch with guest speakers. An offering will be accepted. Speakers include the Rev. Randy Willis, Encountering Jesus in Agony, April 9; the Rev. Ben Chon, Encountering Jesus Betrayed, April 16.
Lenten Bible study
Duncansville Lutheran will hold Bible study every Wednesday in Lent. Study will be at 5:15 p.m. followed by dinner and fellowship at 6 p.m. For more information contact the church office at 814-695-0508. The group is also collecting canned and boxed goods for the American Rescue Mission every Wednesday.
Indoor yard sale open
An indoor yard sale will be held in the basement of St. Mark’s, Sixth Avenue and Fourth Street, Altoona, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, April 11, and Saturday, April 12. There will be more than 23 vendors with something for everyone. The kitchen will be open.
Food distribution planned
Food pantry distribution will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Fridays, April 11 and April 18, at the Twenty-eighth Street Church of the Brethren. Food is distributed to those in need by appointment only, and appointments must be made by the Thursday prior to the distribution date. Call Deb at 814-207-8293 for information and an appointment. The church is at 28th Street and Union Avenue, Altoona.
Free lunch offered
Free lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12, at the Twenty-eighth Street Church of the Brethren, 28th Street and Union Avenue, Altoona. The meal will include chicken noodle soup, roll and dessert.
Chicken BBQ tickets available
The annual Spring Chicken BBQ will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, April 13, at the St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen, 2201 Union Ave., Altoona.Tickets are $10, which includes a half chicken, Murf’s potato salad from DelGrosso’s Park, applesauce and a roll.
Homemade baked goods also will be available for purchase.
Tickets may be purchased at the Soup Kitchen from 8 to 11 a.m. weekdays or at the door.
Kids splash night
The Well Ministry Center will host a kids splash night Monday, April 14. A family meal will be served at 5:30 p.m. followed by fun, crafts, games and a lesson of love of Jesus for the kids.
Parents can stay at the Cafe or come back at
7 p.m. for the kids. The Well is at 605 Burns Ave., Altoona.
Run, walk benefits programs
St. Thomas Lutheran Church will host a 5K run/5K walk at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 19, at the church, 1439 Ridge Road, Hooversville. Race applications and sponsor forms are available at https://www.stthomaslutheranchurch.org/5k-race-walk.
All proceeds benefit St. Thomas youth programs in addition to community support for schools, fire departments, police, EMS and those in need.
Ladies video conference planned
The Adorned Ladies Ministry of Calvary Baptist Church, 810 Ruskin Drive, Altoona, will host a ladies video conference from 6:15 to 9 p.m. April 25 and 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. April 26. The conference, “Truth: Uncovering the Lies We Believe,” features well known apologist and Bible scholar, Ken Ham with Dr. Georgia Purdom, Tommye Hammel, Camille Cates and Heidi St. John. Also featured is singer and keyboardist Michael O’Brien in concert Friday evening.

Teen program announced
Faith Baptist Church of Altoona is now hosting an after school program. Stand in the Gap Youth Ministries, geared toward teenagers, was started by Nicole Thompson. It is held in the church Fellowship Hall from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday for all teens in 6th through 12th grade. The program offers teens a safe place to gather, have fun, get a bite to eat, do homework or get help with their schoolwork.
