Fifty years ago this month, the Blair County Historical Society leased Baker Mansion — which was built in 1848 by Elias Baker for $75,000 — as a museum. In 1941, it was purchased for $10,500. A Baker family member last lived there in 1914.

Elaine Glashauser (Roosevelt Junior High), Kasey Prokop (Altoona Area High) and John Reid (Keith Junior High) retired as teachers from the Altoona Area School District and were honored with a dinner at the Calvin House.

A U.S. Dept. of Agriculture study found that the Altoona Area School District was to serve over

1 million lunches to students at a cost of $3.9 million, with $3.6 million of it to be reimbursed by states and federal authorities.
