Bellwood Quilting Bees host show

The Bellwood Quilting Bees will host their annual quilt show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Hillside Community Church Annex, 508 Cambria St., Bellwood. Parking is available.

The show consists of several displays including quilted patriotic items in honor of the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Of particular interest is “Harry’s” quilt, a pieced and quilted American flag replica backed with a collection of photos of WWII soldiers and documents of 9/11. An additional patriotic memorabilia quilt features the history of trains serving the military.

Veterans are encouraged to inquire about the Quilts of Valor program and forms will be available to complete and return to the national organization. In this area, Quilts of Valor are made and distributed by Patriotic Peacemakers of PA through Connie’s Collectibles in Duncansville.

The quilt show includes teaching displays on how to construct the flying geese quilt block and another that shows how to repurpose “orphan blocks” — blocks pieced together and never used in a project.

This year’s Quilting Bees Challenge was to complete a quilting project selected from two books members received as a gift. Visitors may vote for their favorite challenge project, which includes quilts, tote bags, stockings and more.

Additionally, each member will display their personal quilted items. Although items are not for sale, browsing is encouraged so members and visitors share the fellowship found in quilting..

As a service project for 2021, members created a House Quilt, a quilt made of houses and trees. Each member constructed and contributed two house and two tree blocks with material of their choosing. The group met in late spring, sewed these blocks together to create a fabric community.

Connie’s Collectibles donated the quilting and the completed quilt was presented to the Bellwood-Antis Public Library, which is using it as a fundraiser. The library has the quilt on display and tickets are available for sale until a drawing in late October.

Anyone with a love of quilts — including beginners who wish to learn — are invited to join the Quilting Bees. The quilters meet at 6:30 p.m. the first Thursday of each month at the Bellwood-Antis Public Library.
