Altoona Aglow Lighthouse to meet

Altoona Aglow Lighthouse will meet at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 13, at Gourmet Buffet, 520 Plank Road, Altoona. Items for Tradition House will be collected at the meeting. Items needed include linens, dishes, cleaning supplies, toiletries and more.

The featured speaker will be Shannon Mielnik, a retired health and physical education teacher, wife, mother of four and follower of Jesus. She and her husband, Mark, own a company called YBM Wellness. Through their company, which is built on the four pillars of faith, family, fitness and finances, they coach men and women of all ages in their health and wellness journey. Mielnik has also spoken at several women’s conferences on the subject of purpose and identity and, with her husband, ministers to the youth at Center City Church in Altoona.

Clothing giveaway planned

Grace’s Closet at Grace Lutheran Church, 1114 N. Cambria St., Bellwood, will host a clothing giveaway from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 8. Spring and summer clothing is available. Those attending are asked to wear masks and follow social distancing guidelines. For more information, call the church at 814-742-7501.

Free lunch offered

The Twenty-eighth Street Church of the Brethren will offer free lunches the second Saturday of each month. The church will continue to offer drive-thru and walk-up service at this time.

The next giveaway is set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., while supplies last, Saturday, May 8. The church is at 2800 Union Ave., Altoona.

Turkey and waffle dinner available

Turkey and homemade waffle dinners will be available for takeout only from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at the Pavia Activity Building in Pavia. Pre-orders are required and can be made by calling Donna at 814-276-3586 or Cleo at 814-276-3432 by May 9. The dinner will include turkey, two homemade waffles, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, fruit salad and cake. Cost of the meal is $10. All proceeds will go to the missions supported by the Mount Zion Church of Pavia.

Area food pantries open

* The St. Vincent DePaul Assumption Chapel Food Pantry, 1523 Adams Ave., has never closed during the pandemic. We are open on Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 to 10:30. All interested parties must call 814-943-7962 for an appointment. Picture identification and being masked are required.

* Twenty-eighth Street Church of the Brethren Food Ministry, 2800 Union Ave., Altoona, will be open by appointment only every Friday. Call by Wednesday for a Friday appointment. For more information or to make an appointment, call the pantry at 814-207-8293.

* The food pantry distribution at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Eighth Avenue and 13th Street, Altoona, will be held from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 27. Distribution is on a drive-thru basis to maximize social distancing. Masks are required for those on foot or getting out of their vehicles. All are welcome. * The Sacred Heart Food Pantry is open from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. every Wednesday at 2009 Sixth Ave., Altoona, in the old school next to the church. No ID or income requirements are needed at the present time. No appointments are needed; the pantry is open for walk-ins. Masks and social distancing requirements are in effect.
