Milk giveaway planned

A milk giveaway will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at Christ Community United Methodist Church, 5715 Roselawn Ave., Altoona. One thousand gallons of milk will be given away while supplies last. All are welcome.

Eighth novena to be held

The eighth novena of the year 2020 to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Therese (the Little Flower) offered by the Discalced Carmelite Nuns of Loretto will open Saturday, Aug. 22, and end Sunday, Aug. 30.

Petitions may be sent to Mother Prioress, Discalced Carmelite Monastery, P.O. Box 57, Loretto, PA 15940.

Tables available at yard/bake sale

Asbury United Methodist Church will host a yard/bake sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at 1341 Grandview Road, Altoona. People may set up a table for $10. For more information about setting up a table, contact Donna Bardine at 814-946-5422.

Churches host backpack giveaways

— The Faith Baptist Church of Altoona is hosting a backpack giveaway from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, in the church fellowship hall located in the lower level of the building. There will be 100 backpacks filled with school supplies available on a first-come, first-served basis. There will also be light refreshments and activities for the children. All children in the community who are in need of a backpack are invited.

— Juniata United Methodist Church is sponsoring a children’s back-to-school backpack giveaway from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 15. Backpacks will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis to families of children in kindergarten through high school. Families can drive through or walk up to the portico doors of the church to receive a backpack. Those attending are asked to wear a mask and follow social distancing guidelines.

Altoona Aglow Lighthouse to meet

Altoona Aglow Lighthouse will meet at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at Gourmet Buffet, 520 W. Plank Road, Altoona. The speaker will be the president of the South Central Area Team, Jackie Mostoller, who will talk about the importance of the fellowship of women.

Food pantries open

— Sacred Heart Food Pantry, 2009 Sixth Ave., is open from 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. every Wednesday. Everyone is welcome. Currently, no ID or proof of income in needed. For more information, contact Carol at carolr616@verizon.net.

— The Twenty-eighth Street Church of the Brethren food pantry is open Fridays by appointment only. For information or an appointment, call Deb at 207-8293.
