Cross walk, Good Friday events planned

The Blair County Pastors Network will host two Good Friday service. From noon to 3 p.m., the group will carry the cross to four city churches. At each location there will be worship and a brief meditation on the cross. The theme for the afternoon is “The 3 crosses of Good Friday.”

At 7 p.m., there will be a Good Friday service hosted at the Altoona Alliance Church. Seven city pastors will share thoughts on the seven sayings of Christ from the cross. There will also be worship, special music and communion. The community is invited to take part.

Catholic

Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, One Cathedral Square — Morning Prayer at 9 a.m.; Celebration of the Lord’s Passion at noon; Tenebrae at 7:30 p.m. (Bishop Mark L. Bartchak as celebrant and presider of all services).

Holy Rosary, 900 N. 4th St. — Celebration of the Lord’s Passion at 3 p.m.

Our Lady of Lourdes, 2716 Broad Ave. — Celebration of the Lord’s Passion at noon.

Methodist

McKee United Methodist Church, McKee — 6 p.m.

Wehnwood United Methodist Church — 8:30 a.m. worship service with LuAnn Baker, portraying Esther; 7 p.m. Tenebrae service with the congregations of Juniata, Fairview and Mardorf; noon to 3 p.m., a series of worship services and walking through Altoona. You may join us at one of the worship services or join us for worship and walk with us. We will begin at noon at Providence Presbyterian Church. Participants are invited to ponder the death of Christ and consider the message of the three crosses: The Cross of Rejection, The Cross of Reception and The Cross of Redemption.

– Noon to 12:20 p.m. worship at Providence Presbyterian.

– 12:45 to 1:05 p.m. worship at the Salvation Army.

– 1:40 to 2 p.m. worship at St. Luke’s Episcopal.

– 2:45 to 3 p.m. worship at Second Avenue United Methodist Church.

Llyswen United Methodist Church, 308 Coleridge Ave., Altoona — 7 p.m.

Greenwood United Methodist Church, 1505 E. Walton Ave., Altoona — 7 p.m.

Fairview United Methodist Church — noon; 7 p.m. joint service at Whenwood United Methodist Church.

Wehnwood United Methodist Church — 8 a.m. sacrificial breakfast; 7 p.m. Good Friday service combining Wehnwood, Mardorf and Juniata United Methodist churches.

Episcopal

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 806 13th St. – 1 p.m. Stations of the Cross observance.

Lutheran

Grace Lutheran Church, 1114 N. Cambria, St., Bellwood, — 7 p.m.

Mount Olivet Lutheran Church, Sinking Valley, 2266 Kettle Road, Altoona — 7 p.m., with the Rev. Donna Wolfinger.

Trinity Lutheran Church, 408 N. Sixth Street, Altoona – noon and 6:30 p.m.; Holy Saturday service at 6:30 p.m. will include Holy Communion.

Brethren

Altoona’s First Church of the Brethren, corner of Sixth Avenue and Fifth Street — 6 p.m. The service will recall Christ’s deliberate walk to Gethsemane, His agony and betrayal, culminating with His ultimate sacrifice on the cross. A cross and crown of thorns will be displayed at the front of the sanctuary.

Baptist

Faith Baptist Church of Altoona, 315 40th St., Altoona — noon to 3 p.m. with the theme of “The Glory of the Cross.” Pastor Tom Butler, Reservior Bible Church, Hollidaysburg; Pastor Barry Yingling, Woodcock Valley Bible Church, James Creek; Pastor Mark Mahan, Community Baptist Church, Altoona; and Pastor Gary Dull, Faith Baptist Church, Altoona, will take part in the service. Trumpeter Chiz Rider of State College will present special music.

Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 2121 Fifth Ave., Altoona – Good Friday Seven Last Sayings will be held at 7 p.m. April 19.

United Church of Christ

Faith United Church of Christ, 711 Seventh Ave., Altoona – 7 p.m. The Passion narrative according to St. John will be read; the Choir will sing.

Oasis of Love Church

Oasis of Love Church of Huntingdon, 10991 Station Road across from Southside Elementary – 7 p.m., “Stories of Survival,” an Easter reflection featuring a series of stories, songs, presentations and dances that reflect how Jesus changed lives as the days of His crucifixion and resurrection approached. The evening begins with desserts and coffee at 6:30 p.m.

Other

Juniata area churches — A cross walk will start at 6:30 a.m. in the Mauk and Yates Funeral Home parking lot and progress to the church. Each person participating will have the opportunity to carry the cross. A brief service will be held before and after the walk.
